It was a very upsetting day yesterday. Refereeing for a basketball competition left me physically and mentally drained by the end of it. After handling a 40min++ game, I still have to listen to the complains and "advice" given by the coaches and team managers. One particular remark (out of many) made by a team manager got me pretty mad. He said, "You know why in basketball games there are fights? It's because of the referees!" Being nice and not wanted to add fuel to the fire, I simply kept quiet and "embraced" all the "pointers" that were given.
But as I thought about that remark, I think the correct way to phrase it is, "You know why there are fights in basketball games? It's because the players do not have good basketball ethics!" Short of calling it sin, what actually started off as a fun and leisure sport sometimes ends up in a battle for pride and victory at any cost. That's when all the little action and excessive physical contact kicks in and when the referee fails to make a call, he/she becomes the target board for opinions and an individuals' Point of Views. Yes I do admit I make bad calls or miscalls sometimes but I only have a pair of eyes to work with so some some consideration would be very very much appreciated.
We are all entitled to our opinions. Problem is it is subjective to our own standards. Thank God for the Bible so that there is nothing to argue about. So no doubt it was upsetting, but I thank God for the lessons I learnt from it at the end of the day.
